Hannah Gould is a Professor of Cell and Molecular Biophysics at King's College London. IgE is well known for its role in allergic disease, but its beneficial functions are quite mysterious. On the basis of her work on the biology of IgE and the basis of allergic disease, Prof. Gould suggests that combating the growth of tumor cells may be one of the functions of IgE, and that IgE antibodies may be useful for immunotherapy of cancers in solid tissues. She has demonstrated that an IgE antibody directed against a human ovarian tumor-specific antigen is active in killing ovarian tumor cells in both in vitro assays and in mouse xenograft models of ovarian carcinoma.
